Why you should hire millennials

Millennials are stereotyped as being less competitive, entitled, avocado toast loving, technology addicted workers. Sure, many millennials are glued to their smartphones and social media, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have important things to contribute to your organization – nor does it mean that they don’t work hard. 

By 2020, millennials will make up 50% of the workforce and their share of the workforce will continue to grow from there. On the whole, this group is goal and value driven and cares about its impact on society and the planet. So, millennials are not only going to represent a large portion of your talent pool but will also be looking to the job market for an opportunity to make that impact. That is good news for employers – hiring millennials can actually offer a number of (maybe) unexpected benefits to companies.

Perspective

There’s no denying it – millennials aren’t as experienced as the baby boomers in the marketplace, but boomers can’t beat the open-minded perspective millennials have. Millennials have experienced the world changing around them quicker than generation X, so they see new possibilities before they arise. They are always willing to think out of the box and come up with fresh and innovative ideas. 

Plus hiring young employees can work out great if your business aims to attract young customers. After all, who knows better what the young generation wants than themselves? They’ll bring marketing and product design strategies that better appeal to their age group, which will kickstart your sales. 

Qualified

Millennials are on track to be the most educated generation ever with 27% of women and 21% of men having completed a Bachelor’s Degree by age 33. Most of them are highly qualified, having done sometimes multiple internships to gain professional work experience. Hiring millennials will modernize your organization’s workforce, as well as bring the most up to date knowledge pertaining to your sector. 

Tech Savvy

Millennials have grown up using computers, portable devices, the Internet, and social media. They have digital and technical knowledge at their fingertips. They pick up and apply technology better and quicker than the experienced baby boomers in tech-companies. You’ll have little or no trouble training these people on computer systems or new equipment. 

Further, millennials are familiar with the latest communications technology and know their way around social media. There is no company in existence today that does not need a social media presence to be relevant. Even the millennials without a communications background can help you harness the power of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms and turn that into brand awareness and sales. 

Less focused on money

The older and more experienced generation have high expectations from their previous workplaces when it comes to compensation. The bottom line is usually their only bottom line. 

Unlike baby boomers, the calculation millennials make is usually based on meaning rather than pay. A recent study of Canadian millennials showed that nearly half of this demographic would forgo a raise of about $9,000 to do work they considered more meaningful and impactful, so this benefit may not work for every job you offer. Also, with less experience, their salary expectations tend to be lower. But do ensure your salaries are competitive and commensurate with experience and responsibility. If you are truly unable to offer competitive salaries, millennials are more likely than other generations to be open to flexibility perks, such as remote days or additional vacation days. 

Motivated

What’s better than having a highly motivated and excited workforce? Millennials are driven and deeply invested in what they do. They are motivated by their will to perform better and bring high-end results. It goes without saying how this particular attribute impacts your business outcomes.

They tend to be more tenacious and eager to learn in the workplace than other generations. Such a disposition leads to quick problem solving and adaptability, as well as a desire to get the job done well before moving on. 

Collaborative

A survey of millennials conducted by IdeaPaint found that 74% of millennials prefer to collaborate in small groups, as opposed to large teams or on their own, and that 38% of millennials feel that antiquated collaboration processes actually damage their company’s innovation potential. Teams with more millennials mean better teamwork, less internal competition and more innovation. This leads to a stronger bottom line, but also a more positive work environment.

The Bottom Line is….

Hiring millennials helps you bring new and innovative talent into your organization. They are highly motivated and enthusiastic about their work. They know (or can find) their way around technology and are keen to learn new things, as well as seize new opportunities. The fact that they seek meaning through their work means that organizations have an opportunity to harness their enthusiasm towards achieving something greater.

Collaboration and sisterhood heightens our personal development

I knew the power of collaboration and sisterhood but this weekend I saw it again.

I am reveling in the energy of the weekend where I was blessed to teach Akashic Records Level 3 to group of women who dove in deep into the trenches of their own souls so they can further uncover their light and be more of a contribution to this world.

It was powerful to see the transformation that occurs when we truly see each other, hear each other and are present to other people’s experiences. 

Reflecting on this weekend, I noticed how much many of us spend time trying to control the experiences of others, trying to prove that we are lovable and trying to prove that we are worthy of love but really the magic is in just BE-ing.

I never noticed the magic of just BE-ing and pure love for me just being me until I spent more time with my nephews and nieces. I realized I love spending time with them because they love me for just me. I don’t have to give them anything, be anything or do anything. I just need to show up, be present and see/hear them.

The same that these women experienced this weekend with each other.

At the root of it all, all of us just want others to be present to our love for them. We want others to see themselves as we see them. We want others to just BE themselves as it gives us permission to be ourselves.

This isn’t just with personal relationships. This is the same at work as well. Each person in your organization wants to be seen and heard so they know their contribution is valued and appreciated. When that is done, magic happens. They perform better. They contribute even more AND they stay engaged with the goals of the company. That person is you who wants to be seen and heard and is in the place to see and hear others so they feel that magic that you want to feel.

As leaders, contributors to organizations and contributors to society, it is your role to BE so you can give permission for others to be.

It is your role to see and hear others so you can be seen and heard as well.

It is your role to build a community of collaboration and sisterhood/brotherhood around you, so you feel that you are fully empowered, you are fully present with your strengths and you are BEing the best version of yourself as you experience love for being just who you are.

The weekend with these wonderful women reminded me the power of mastermind, collaboration and support that we are call for and desire.

I know in my role as a connector that is the work I am hear to do. Connect others through creating community of like-minded women.

This is why the group programs that are offered through Veza are SO important as they allow women to see and hear each other especially when their hearts are raw and they feel ever so vulnerable.

It is time for you to BE, BE seen and BE heard. It is time for you to be you and know you will be loved.

Meet Julie Archambault.

Julie grew up in Montreal where her bicultural-linguistic identity was stuck between Anglophone and Francophone communities, which meant she needed to sort out her identity amidst some hostility. As a child, she was very adventurous and loved walking in the woods and following streams all the way to their source, which is interesting to think of today since she’s someone who follows problems all the way to the source of it.

She always want to get to the Truth. Spiritually, she has always been quite open but living in an environment that was mostly concerned with the material items proved to have its challenges for her. Later in life, she would have to relearn to trust her spiritual gifts and not hide them! At one point, she went underground with them. She was passionate about life: a tiger in sports, an introvert that used acting to own her power and voice.

Then, it was the activist years: Julie wanted to change the world so that it would be a more respectful place. She became a teacher for the same reasons. Then, she had to understand why she was having so much trouble getting into healthy relationships. And this proved to be the start of a very deep inquiry about sex. About toxic relationships. About our childhoods. She started interviewing all kinds of people. She also trained as an Akashic Record Consultant since this was the modality that was helping her heal so fast and efficiently.

Then, she birthed “Fifty Shades of Connection: from Violently Disconnected to Blissfully Connected Sex” a book that follows this spectrum and discovers the laws of energy governing sex and our sexual energy. (Almost ready to print) Now, she has launched a business called Co-Creative Sex and has led programs to help her participants heal their sexual energy.

She is just getting her momentum going. She has so much to share on sex; game-changing information is on the horizon!!!

Tell me in 100 words who you are? How would you describe yourself.

I’m a woman on a mission! : ) I believe in helping people reaching their full human and spiritual potential. I have discovered some really powerful insights on how to heal our sexual energy and how this in turn helps us to heal our lives. Nothing like empowering women to embody their full selves, and this includes their sexual energy. Our sexual energy holds the imprint of all our wounding. What an amazing teacher to tune into!

So tell us, Julie: What inspires you most? What motivates you to get up every morning?

I feel motivated to fully embody who I am. I want to fully live into my potential and accomplish my mission on earth! Which keeps on revealing itself to me. Once I got a little fortune on my yogi tea bag. It said, “Without realizing who you are, happiness cannot come to you.” And this is true. This is why I am so motivated to “realize” who I am. And, it is starting to all make sense now! Exciting times!

What is it that you feel that you teach others through how you act/show up each day?

I teach people to connect to their hearts, to their feminine power, to their feelings, to their power. I teach people to release all past traumas so that they can show up fully and shine in their potential. I teach people about vulnerability and deeper connection to their partners or future partners. How to be more visible and speak one’s truth. I help people own their “shit” and “shadow” so that they can move forward in life. I teach people how to go from “violently disconnected to blissfully connected sex” and bring clarity on a whole slew of “loaded” subjects around sexuality. I help people understand what energetic transaction they are participating in and why.

What is one change you’d like to see in the world?

Seeing women fully empowered and walking in their divine light and men supporting them. Expressions of Healthy Sexuality and Healthy Relationships. (I.E. Not accepting to be lured into toxic relationships and sexuality. Empowered to manifest a wholesome, supportive, connective and exciting sexual relationships for themselves.) Helping people embody their power and light.

Meet Aimee Sehwoerer.

After founding a worldwide Marketing Consulting firm, Aimee joined Investors Group in 2014. She is a well-known mentor and advocate for financial literacy, featured in magazines and television.

She is passionate in helping clients achieve their financial goals through various areas of financial planning. She builds and maintains strong relationships by delivering short and long term quality sound advice on investment, debt and estate planning issues that we face today, for Canadian families and growing businesses.

Currently enrolled in the Certified Financial Planning programs, while supporting and volunteering with small organizations and various boards and committees.

Aimee is an entrepreneur and civil rights advocate, who is passionate about financial education.

She is a die hard lover of chocolates, novels and adventures!

So tell us, Aimee: What inspires you most? What motivates you to get up every morning?

I find it rewarding to wake up knowing that I will make a difference in someone’s financial life, that will enable them to reach their financial goals and live the life they’ve always wanted. It doesn’t get better that!

What is it that you feel that you teach others through how you act/show up each day?

Discipline and Mindset!

What is one change you’d like to see in the world?

End to any form of abuse and bullying.

Which of your contributions to date have given you the greatest sense of pride?

Partnering up with organizations such as BYOBF, Mompreneurs Canada to discuss about financial challenges and solutions, with simple language, values and goals that resonate with me and many other women’s.

How to Create your Own Work Abroad Opportunities: Expanding personal perspectives while gaining invaluable work experience overseas.

We live in a world where we can connect to literally every corner of the planet. Sure, there may be some disconnect with remote Antarctica, deep in the jungles of Africa or the Amazon, but we’re pretty well connected worldwide. In 2015, the International Telecommunication Union reported approximately 3.2 billion people online. Of that population approximately 2 billion from from developing countries.

This level of connectivity truly makes the globe seem a lot smaller and a lot more accessible to us.  Further, with this ability to link and build relationships virtually, every individual also has the power to contribute and make a global impact— not just online but through work abroad opportunities.

Why Would Someone Want to Work Abroad?

I’m going to share my story so you can get a bit of insight as to why I’m personally such a huge proponent of overseas work experience.

In 2009, I volunteered in Botswana as an HR advisor for an NGO. During those three weeks, I experienced a profound shift in perspective on the AIDS situation in the world, how big the world really is, and how relatively small my own little world was back home in Vancouver. That trip changed everything.

I met people from around the world, and I lost so many preconceived ideas about people who are living with HIV. I was in a country where one in three people is impacted by the disease, and I never knew who was HIV positive, and who wasn’t. It really reinforced the fact that at the end of the day, people are defined by who they are at their core, rather than the labels we affix to them.

People are individuals.

That was my first experience working abroad, and it allowed me to realize just how much travelling can broaden our perspectives. It opens both our eyes and our minds to what else is out there, and also made me realize how important it is to create these opportunities for ourselves: so we can learn and grow while also being forces for positive change in the global community.

Volunteering

After my trip to Botswana, I went to India as a volunteer at an orphanage for children whose parents were imprisoned, and that turned into a paid contract. Amazingly, I made this opportunity for myself simply by contacting the orphanage and letting them know that I wanted to volunteer with them. Once I was there, I helped them fundraise for their nonprofit marketing initiatives, and the results were so successful that they kept me on in a paid role. The work I did there had a profound impact on the children’s lives: the kids at the orphanage were either waiting for their parents to get out of jail, or else they were orphaned because their parents had died while imprisoned. They needed money for food and to go to school, otherwise they would have ended up on the streets. This was good work that benefited so many, and all it took to put this positive change into action was a simple phone call.

After my time in India, I kept manifesting that I wanted to work internationally, and managed to network and connect with a number of people who did international work. They helped me to secure volunteer positions with nonprofit organizations, and that was a stepping stone to paid international positions.

Volunteering abroad is an idea way to dip your toes into the work-abroad experience, and are often easier to secure VISAs for. There are many different programs that allow people to volunteer abroad for global experience, but there are also ways to work around various VISA requirements. As an example, depending on how long a country allows visitors to stay, you can go “on vacation” for a month somewhere and work remotely for your company.

Conferences and Trade Mission

Networking to make connections is vital when it comes to volunteering, but another option is to take advantage of opportunities to go on trade missions. If the company you’re working for provides chances to attend different conferences, you have the ability to network with others at those conferences, and to also glean firsthand awareness of what may be possible within that country.

This is especially relevant if you’re in business, since trade missions allow you to grow your business with federal and provincial/state government assistance. It’s desirable for people to export to other countries, so these government bodies can provide funding and resources to help you grow your presence elsewhere, and establish good supplier/customer connections. To look into this further, take some time and delve into resources for small businesses, especially those that focus on women’s initiatives.

Whichever route you choose to take, there are numerous opportunities to gain you invaluable experience working in countries you’ve always wished to visit. Your presence there can have a monumental impact on our global community plus you’ll leave with broadened perspectives and spectacular memories.

Meet Mani Gill.

Mani Gill was born in Ludhiana, India but grew up in England and now lives in Surrey, BC. She has a BBA in Human Resources but found being self-employed a lot more interesting. Mani has over 11 years of experience working in the family business as a Mortgage Broker but has since pursued a career as a Real Estate Agent. The satisfaction of putting a client in the home of their dreams is an extraordinary feeling, and Mani loves to make the process easy and stress-free for her clients.

Working in the family business was great, but over time she felt like she wasn’t being challenged enough for her own growth. Working as a Real Estate Agent gave her the freedom to work hard and be challenged without the security of her family. It was a big step, but one that she’s glad she took. She currently works around Surrey, Langley & White rock areas.

Mani has always been passionate about real estate and is dedicated to helping others through the process of buying or selling a home. She takes time to continually upgrade her knowledge, training, and professional expertise and is up to date on current market trends. More importantly, she takes the time to listen carefully to her clients and to fully understand their wants and requirements.

In addition, she can call on the resources of her entire company and other professionals to assist in any situation that may be presented to her. Mani is dedicated to her clients, loves to work, and is willing to put in the time and effort to get her listings sold. She is committed to her clients’ success!

She has been a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society for 10 years, and will be starting “Laughter Yoga” in April: she feels that with the daily stress that everyone goes through, this would be a great place to release tension and have a good time.

So tell us, Mani:  What inspires you most? What motivates you to get up every morning?

For a few years, I got lost with life because at that time nothing was going the way I wanted it to. But now I realize that there was a reason behind that, which I just couldn’t see at that time. Knowing I have a few close friends and family members who believe in me even when I don’t believe in myself. I am blessed to have some really incredible people in my life who have taught me to live my life on my own terms. My dreams are my biggest motivator because I honestly believe that everyone has the capability to make their dreams come true.

How do you feel that your actions teach or inspire others?

I try to inspire others by showing them inner strength: by doing things that are out of their comfort zone. I didn’t do this myself for the longest time, but I eventually realized there is no growth in your comfort zone. The only way to grow is when you are uncomfortable.

What is one change you’d like to see in the world?

There are so many changes that I would like to see, but one that stands out the most to me is facing your fear instead of running away from it. Fear does not have to be a bad thing—it can be a driving force with which you can move forward.

Have faith in the path you have chosen, and believe in God. There is a bigger purpose for us all here, and it’s up to us to make it happen.

Which of your contributions to date have given you the greatest sense of pride?

My most proud moment up until now is not just one moment: it’s that every moment that I have made a decision for myself to empower myself. Those decisions have made me feel good about myself—inside and out.
